Positive aspects
AI makes it possible to optimize resources and reduce waste, as in the case of digitizing educational materials and eliminating paper, directly contributing to a reduction in the use of natural resources. It is estimated that approximately 40% of all wood harvested worldwide is used to make paper and pulp products. This puts pressure on forests and biodiversity areas, reduces natural habitats and contributes to the loss of vegetation cover. It also takes about 10 liters of water to produce a single sheet of A4 paper.

 

Negative aspects

AI training consumes huge amounts of energy, with data centers accounting for around 1% of global electricity consumption and contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Some models produce emissions equivalent to five cars over their lifetime. In addition, the frequent disposal of hardware to meet computing needs increases the production of electronic waste, which releases harmful toxins into the environment.

- Send discarded equipment to a recycling centre.
- Encouraging project participants to plant trees in permitted areas to reduce carbon.
